How I Met Your Mother – The Rough Patch

Other than the ongoing van/station wagon joke and Lily constantly referring to storm trooper as robots, I didn’t really enjoy this episode.  I enjoyed Barney and Robin as a couple and it seems like such a waste their romance is over.  It feels like the writers just put them to break them up a few episodes late.  I’m just holding out for the Robin Sparkles/Alan Thick variety show.  Barney needs to get on that one now he’s a playboy again.Big Bang Theory

Big Bang Theory – The Guitarist Amplification

Sheldon is one of the best characters on television at the moment and Jim Parsons is a comedy genius.  Period.  His re-enactment of his parent’s fight was spectacular and I must have rewound the scene at least a dozen times.  The Penny/Leonard fight got old pretty quick, but the final scene of Sheldon having to share his couch with a stranger made up for it.  He really should have asked for more than a comic book and robot.

Castle – Kill the Messenger

While watching Castle, I often find that while it’s a mystery show, I’m not usually invested in the whodunit aspects.  Nathan Fillion is one of the most charismatic actors working and the cast of characters is simply fun to watch.  I’d tune in every week even if there wasn’t a crime that needed to be solved.  That said, this week had an awesome mystery (someone really did kill a messenger) and fun extras (breaking down the door of an elderly lady and then having to drink tea in bullet proof jacket and cats crawling all over the good detectives).  All in all, it was a very satisfying episode…even if I wish we’d gotten to see the old lady in handcuffs.  She was evil.

Community – Debate 109Castle with Cats

Oh how I get a laugh out of Abed and his films and this time Shirley’s reaction (“What do you need the paper for? You knew what was going to happen yesterday, you Middle Eastern magic 8-ball!”) was absolutely golden.  I didn’t really care about the debate of whether man was good or evil.  However, Greendale’s basketball team had me laughing out loud. (Greendale needs a win. The best compliment our sports program gets is that our basketball team is really gay.”)

30 Rock – The Problem Solvers

So I should start by admitting I’m a complete sucker for Canadian humor and so Danny’s ongoing issue with pronouncing “about” was a highlight for me.  (On a side note, I really enjoyed Cheyenne Jackson and I hope he gets to stay around.)  Surprisingly, I also really enjoyed the Jenna/Tracy storyline and their new role as Problem Solvers.  Well, it was more their confusion with their shirts than their actual problem solving skills, but either way, it was delightful.  Oh and Kenneth was his usual fun self.   I wish we had an intern like him at the archives.

White Collar – Flip of the Coin30 Rock - Problem Solvers

Well, that was a fun outing.  I could have done with less crying, but that’s about my only complaint.  I absolutely loved that Peter and Mozzie not only met, but also worked together.  (Plus, how awesome was it to see Mozzie saved the day by hitting Patrick Ames with a limo.)  The case wasn’t overly complex, but it was still a fun romp through New York.

I also enjoyed seeing Garrett Dillahunt as a villain once again, even if he was barely in the episode and underutilized.  I was a fan of Life and watching him in the episode made me miss the sadistic Roman Novikov.

Numb3rs – Ultimatum

I’ve always enjoyed episode with Agent Edgerton, but I’m really not sure about last night’s episode.  While I found the search for the elusive prisoner interesting, overall I didn’t find the episode very compelling.  (I hate to say it, but I’m not all that heartbroken that this season has been trimmed to 16 episodes and a seventh season is probably not on the horizon.)  Perhaps it needed more Amita, Charlie, and Alan.  Or perhaps I’m still missing Larry’s presence.  Either way, I’m glad Colby made it out alive and Missi Pyle’s character turned out to be evil.   The role was a waste of her talent.

How I Met Your Mother – Definition

For some reason, this premiere of HIMYM didn’t really do anything for me.  Ted is still an idiot I tolerate because I love the other characters so much. Marshall is awesome…especially with a whip and wearing a suit.  The Lily and Barney friendship is still sweet.  While I’m not invested in the Robin/Barney (Barbin?  Robney??) relationship, I’m willing to see what they do with it.  Plus you have to love any episode where one of the main characters admits to having a whip guy and a first day gift consists of an Indiana Jones hat.   I’m not giving up on the show, I’m just not loving it as much as I once did.

Big Bang Theory – The Electric Can Opener FluctuationBig Bang Theory

Oh Big Bang Theory, how I have missed you over the summer.  I originally started watching the show because it was on before HIMYM, but it has become a favorite in it’s own right.  Jim Parson is amazing and he was fabulous in this episode.   The hurt he was able to convey at being betrayed by his friends was kind of sweet and Ii laughed out loud when Penny started to sing the “Sad Kitty” song to try and make him feel better and then referenced the new Star Trek  movie.  (“”Remember the scene in the new Star Trek movie, when Kirk has to take over the ship, so he tells Spock all that stuff he knew wasn’t true, like saying Spock didn’t care his mom died?”)

I’m looking forward to watching the relationship between Penny and Leonard develop this season.  However, I have to say each week I laugh hardest at the Howard/Raj exchanges.  This week, the tie is between:

Howard: I call it the George Clooney.
Raj: I call it a Mario and Luigi, but whatever.

and

Howard: Sheldon, you remember the first few weeks we were looking for magnetic monopoles and not finding anything, and you were acting like an obnoxious, giant dictator?
Raj: I thought we were going to be gentle with him.
Howard: That’s why I added the ‘-tator’.

Castle – Deep in Death

I said pretty much everything in my episode review. That was a whirlwind of a premiere.  I thoroughly enjoyed the episode with the exception that I wanted it to continue past the hour.  The Russian mafia/gambling/drug storyline definitely kept me guessing.  Well until Castle went under cover.  Although I give the writers credit, the surveillance van conversation in which Beckett asked if anyone had a bad feeling about the situation and both of the other detectives raise their hands was beyond clichéd, but I was still amused.  That’s pretty amazing.

I’m still blown away by Castle’s apology at the end of the episode.  I think it was perfect and Nathan Fillion did a terrific job of making the apology sincere and convey the respect Castle has for his friendship/partnership with Beckett.  I thought Beckett’s response of “I’ll see you tomorrow” ended the episode perfectly.
Community - Pierce on Fuego
Community – Spanish 101

Well this episode sold the show for me.  I’ll be tuning in until it gets cancelled.  After a great pilot, there is always the concerned the next episode will suck.  I mean, Reaper anyone??   “Spanish 101” was even funnier.  Between Senor Chang (“Use your hands! It’s 90 percent of Spanish!”) and the Jeff/Pierce presentation which somehow combined tiny hats, afro wigs, massive flags, and robots, this show almost makes me want to take classes at the local community college.  My love of Joel McHale continues to grow and the other characters are delightful.  Oh and how could I forget Abed and Troy’s Spanish rap.  If you haven’t seen it, go to YouTube now.  Here’s the English translation:

Where is the library?
My name is T-Bone the disco spider.
Disco, doll, the library is in big mustache, dog, lard.
Lard, mustache, huge, little head is ice cream, beer is good.
Good day, I like cold potatoes, the goat’s mustache is Cameron Diaz.

Numb3rs – Hangman

So I watched the premiere, but the only thing I remember is that Amita and Charlie are getting married.  Yes, after six years my dream is finally coming true.  Sure the episode also involved Don and the team tried to protect an activist from an unbalanced Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole).

Psych – High Top Fade OutPsych - Keenan and Stefan

I was a bit concerned when the preview last week revealed that Keenan Thompson and Jaleel White (Urkel/Stefan on The Family Matters) were going to be on this week’s episode.  It turns out I worried for no reason.  This episode was one of the best the series has ever produced.   I mean, the musical numbers alone made the episode awesome, but the mystery plot was pretty interesting as well.

The only bad thing about the episode was the casting of Kurt Fuller on the show.  Fuller plays dickish angel Zachariah on Supernatural for the last year and it took me out of the episode.  However, that is my only complaint and that’s pretty good! Actually, I think I’ll go watch it again.

Glee - Josh GrobanGlee – Acafellas

I honestly don’t know what I think about this show anymore. I love the musical numbers and the concept of the show, but I’m not really connecting with the characters. I still think of Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) as Link from the Broadway cast of Hairspray and Finn (Cory Monteith) is an opposite version of his character on Kyle XY.  I was extremely thankful for the presence of Victor Garber this week and the toning down of Terri. I found her beyond obnoxious and I hope the fake pregnancy storyline doesn’t last. It’s a bit too outlandish for me.
Oh, how I love Josh Groban’s sense of humor. The man is funny and loves to poke fun at his own image. (“Now you might be thinking why would a pop star like me come over here and talk to you? Well, let me tell you something, throngs of screaming teenagers don’t do it for Josh Groban. No. Josh Groban loves a blousy alcoholic.”)  I remember his first television appearance on Ally McBeal before he hit it big.  It’s nice to see he hasn’t lost that with all the fame and success he’s received in the subsequent years. I have to agree with Sandy. Josh Groban really is “an angel sent from heaven to deliver platinum records unto us.”

Community – PilotCommunity - Cast

First off, I should confess I’m an avid fan of The Soup and I love Joel McHale with a passion. I would pay to watch the man read from a phone book. The addition of one of my favorite correspondents from The Daily Show, John Oliver, just made everything more interesting. From the pilot, I’m unsure where the show is going in the long term, but I laughed quite a bit and all the characters were interesting, so I’m definitely in for awhile at least. It’s good to see Chevy Chase back on my television screen after his episode arc on Chuck last season. Some of the characters border on caricature, but McHale’s charisma quickly makes me forget and I’m smiling to myself again.

NumbersNumb3rs – Angels and Devils

Sure the kidnapping plot was a bit clunky, but the return of Agent Ian Edgerton (Lou Diamond Phillips) is always welcome and James Callis brought his A game. His portrayal of Mason Duryea was creepy and unsettling, much like his character of Baltar on Battlestar Galactica.
I’m glad I re-watched the finale in order to remind me of the marriage cliffhanger for this season. I’m a big fan of Amita and Charlie and hopefully the writers don’t make them split up like Hodgins and Angela on Bones. I’d like to see how they handle an engagement and wedding. Plus Alan planning a wedding should be fun to watch.

Psych – Bollywood HomicidePsych - Bollywood Homicide

The only thing I have ever seen Sendhil Ramamurthy in until this episode was in a comparison pictures with Jared Padalecki. In episodes of their respective shows, they wore the same shirt and of course the two fan groups felt the need to hash out who wore it the best.   (Credit to Bussy at TWoP)  I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It reminded me quite a bit of the Spanish soap opera episode they did in the second season. It was fun to watch and with only three episodes left this year, I’m already missing my silly Friday show. Oh and the Bollywood credits were AWESOME.
