Marking Calendar !! TV Series Finales

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

May is here, and so, too, are the finales of our favorite shows. This month, the bulk of network programming signs off for the summer — and some of it, forever. Below is a list of finale dates.

As of right now, only one is definitely a series finale, although it’s likely several others also will be. The networks have their Upfront Presentations, where they announce the schedules for next year, the week of May 16. The fate of anything not already renewed or canceled will be announced then.

In the schedule below, I’ve noted what shows have been renewed and what ones are on the bubble. Of the ones that are unmarked, renewal is pretty much guaranteed for all of them; the networks simply haven’t made an announcement yet.

So check the list for your favorites, then sit back, relax and enjoy!

“JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE” - Throughout sweeps, Jimmy Kimmel hosts an all-star lineup of guests including Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner, Adam Sandler, Matthew Perry, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Kim Kardashian, Topher Grace, Martin Lawrence, Chef Bobby Flay, Diana Agron and a special Justin Bieber episode. In addition, for the sixth consecutive year, ABC presents “Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Academy Awards(r),” on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27. Live from the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA, a special broadcast of the late-night talk-show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs following the Oscar telecast and local news. February also brings musical performances from Adele, Cake, Jewel, Black Dub and special performances from Dallas by Nelly, Ke$ha and Pitbull. “Jimmy Kimmel Live” airs, MONDAY – FRIDAY (12:00-1:06 a.m., ET).

“WIPEOUT” – “Winter Wipeout: Hockey Pucks and Bieber Fever” — “Remember the ‘Agony of Defeat’ guy? It’s like that for a whole hour!,” says host John Henson. Contestants pay a visit to the Gingerbread House, guaranteed to hit them right on the sweet spot, which in turn earns them a one-way ticket to Big Ball-ville. Players will also face the Yule Log Jam, which was liked so much that a ring was put on it. Meanwhile, John Henson catches Bieber Fever which quickly goes to his head — Henson then steps out of the warm and cozy booth he’s accustomed to and makes his way down on to the cold and frozen course. Upon joining the contestants, he helps break the ice among them by flinging over-sized hockey pucks at their heads with amazing accuracy as they strive to make it past the obstacles in the Wipeout Ice Arena. Only three tough contestants will move on to the Winter Wipeout Zone, battling it out for $50,000. Hosted by John Anderson (ESPN’s “SportsCenter”), John Henson (E! Entertainment’s “Talk Soup”) and co-hosted by Jill Wagner, “Wipeout” airs THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET).

“GREY’S ANATOMY” – “Don’t Deceive Me (Please Don’t Go)” — Derek begins the long series of trial surgeries and Meredith is offended that she wasn’t asked to work on the study. Cristina is back stronger than ever, but must fight an eager Jackson for a surgery with Teddy, on “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET).

“PRIVATE PRACTICE” – “Heaven Can Wait” — Addison plans Bizzy and Susan’s wedding while trying to keep her distance from the overly flirtatious Dr. Rodriquez. Sam is concerned about the care his longtime patient is receiving, and Sheldon refers Charlotte to his mentor and friend for psychiatric help, on “Private Practice,” THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET). Guest stars include JoBeth Williams, Cristi‡n de la Fuente and Ann Cusack.

“SUPERNANNY” – “Potter Family” – “This is my life, and it sucks,” admits father-of-four Chris Potter. Chris and his wife, Joy, have four children who they feel are very disrespectful. Joy says that Chris is too “old school” – yelling, scaring the kids, and being too strict and temperamental. Noah, 10, has a strained relationship with his father, who berates him as a brat when he’s angry, and the younger siblings also come under fire. Chris feels that Joy is undermining him by challenging his parenting style, which his own mother didn’t do with his dad when he was growing up. Jo Frost observes that Joy is inconsistent about discipline, but also that Chris could break Noah’s spirit if things don’t change. Joy sadly tells Jo that her marriage is on the line if she and Chris can’t get on the same page. Is it too late for this family to change for the better?, on “Supernanny,” FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET).

“PRIMETIME: WHAT WOULD YOU DO?” – The show travels to Arizona to test bystanders’ reactions to racial profiling in light of the controversial new bill that will require police to ask people they suspect might be illegal aliens to show identification. Will anyone intervene when they witness racial profiling of this sort? John Qui–ones steps into the role of the one being profiled. Additionally, will anyone come forward to stop a man from stealing a waiter’s tip, or when a coffee shop manager discriminates against two deaf women trying to apply for jobs?, on “Primetime: What Would You Do?,” FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET).

“A BARBARA WALTERS SPECIAL: A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH” — What do Barbara Walters, President Bill Clinton, David Letterman, Regis Philbin, Robin Williams and Charlie Rose all have in common? They all went from being in the spotlight to being in the operating room for life and death open heart surgery. Now in a groundbreaking report, the “brotherhood of the cracked chest club” (as Robin Williams describes them) all open their hearts to Walters and reveal their emotional stories of how they triumphed over heart disease. The special offers an intimate portrait of these most public figures, infused with laughter and tears. Walters also takes viewers on an unprecedented behind-the-scenes journey of her own battle from discovery of a faulty heart valve to the operating table and recovery. In addition, she talks to doctors, including her own, about what viewers, especially women, need to know to save themselves and their loved ones, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET).

“THE BACHELOR” — “Episode 1506″ – The excited remaining eight women break out their passports as they travel to the lush, tropical country of Costa Rica. The stakes are ratcheted up as Chantal gets a second one-on-one date to zipline through the thick jungle. Rain threatens to dampen their spirits, but will it cool off their passion? Brad escorts six bachelorettes on a challenging date to the middle of the rain forest where he and the women must rappel down a waterfall, but the night turns serious and Brad surprises all the ladies with his rose selection. Then Alli gets her first individual date, but she must face her greatest fear when she and Brad explore a cave together. Michelle decides to pay the Bachelor an unexpected late night visit to his room, but will it be hot – or not? Dramatic revelations at the rose ceremony kick everyone’s emotions into high gear. Only six women will remain on the journey to the romantic Caribbean island of Anguilla, on “The Bachelor,” MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET). Chris Harrison is the host.

“CASTLE” - “Lucky Stiff” – The brutal murder of a $117 million lottery winner has Castle and Beckett up to their eyeballs in suspects, envious and angered by the victim’s sudden move from the poorhouse to the penthouse. As the precinct buzzes with fantasies of what our cops would do if they won the lottery, Martha struggles with the reality of such a decision when she suddenly inherits money she feels she doesn’t deserve, on “Castle,” MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET).

“NO ORDINARY FAMILY” - “No Ordinary Double Standard” — After a friend is attacked, Stephanie tells Jim that she wants to join forces with him to help catch the perp. But when Jim informs Stephanie that he’s built for crime fighting – and she’s not – the competition is on to see which one of them can solve the case first. Meanwhile, Daphne feels like Jim is invoking a double standard when he allows JJ to date a senior but won’t let her do the same, and Katie learns some disturbing news about Joshua – aka The Watcher — on “No Ordinary Family,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET). Ethan Suplee (“My Name Is Earl”) guest stars.

“V” – “Concordia” – Anna uses her newest gift of mankind, “Concordia,” as a cover to hide an invading fleet of breeding vessels that will be used to ensure the perpetuation of Visitors for future generations. A love triangle is uncovered and the detectives must piece together Lakeland’s two lives, the one with his wife and daughter and the other with his married lover who has hidden a crucial piece of the puzzle all these years. The detectives are confronted with tough ethical issues in order to bring a resolution to the case, on “Detroit 1-8-7,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET). Boxing legend Tommy Hearns, who grew up in Detroit, guest stars as himself.

“THE MIDDLE” – “Valentine’s Day II” — As Valentine’s Day approaches, Frankie becomes elated when elusive son Axl asks her to accompany him to help pick out a present and choose a restaurant to impress his mysterious new girlfriend – who may be way out of his league. “MR. SUNSHINE” – “PREMIERE” — Matthew Perry stars as Ben Donovan, a self-involved manager of a San Diego sports arena, the Sunshine Center, where curious mishaps and bizarre requests are nothing more than ordinary, on the Premiere of the new comedy “Mr. Sunshine,” WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9 (9:31-10:00 p.m., ET). On what would have been just a typical day at work — trying to get rid of a hockey rink that won’t melt so the circus can go on that night, looking for an elephant lost in the building and arranging an impromptu press conference to repair one of his boss Crystal’s (Allison Janney) PR nightmares – Alice (Andrea Anders) ends her casual relationship with Ben to commit to another man. This happens on Ben’s 40th birthday, just as he’s realizing he doesn’t want to be alone.
