Nicolas Cage Tries to Jumpstart his Career with ‘Seeking Justice’

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Nicolas Cage is one of those hit-or-miss actors who appears in both amazing and terrible movies. You can usually tell by the trailer whether he’s made another flop or if he’s actually paid attention to his strengths and weaknesses enough to pick a solid role for himself.

But there’s something about Cage’s new flick, “Seeking Justice,” that makes me wonder if he might have found the ideal role. No, this new film with January Jones and Guy Pearce doesn’t look like it will be a classic, but it doesn’t look half-bad.

Cage’s character’s wife, played by January Jones, is attacked on the street, which sets the stage for the rest of the film. At the hospital, Cage is approached by Simon, a mysterious character, played by Pierce, who offers to bring justice to the person who attacked Cage’s wife, free of charge. But, of course, there’s a catch. Cage will have to do a favor for Pearce at some point in the future, and there’s no backing out. Cage accepts the offer and – surprise, surprise – finds himself tangled up with the mob.

This film has a few elements that make me think it won’t totally fail. For one thing, Jones and Pearce bring some clout to the film – Jones is best known for her role in “Mad Men” and Pearce has appeared in many films, most recently “The King’s Speech.” Secondly, it works in Cage’s favor that his character comes off as a pretty normal guy caught up in unusual circumstances.

Cage is at his best when he is a regular guy, not a ghost rider, wizard or angry driver. Looking back at Cage’s career, some of his best films include “The Family Man,” “City of Angels,” and “Guarding Tess,” all films where he plays an average, relatable man. It’s when he tries to go bad ass that he loses the audience.

Now in “Justice,” it looks like he might try to go bad ass to protect himself and his wife, but he starts out as just a regular guy. So will “Justice” be the success that brings Cage out of his slump? Or will it be further proof that whatever he once had he lost a long time ago?

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humor enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
