Castle: Fool Me Once

Season 2 Episode 4115162_D_0181

Aired October 12, 2009

Review by Holli

“What you see is not really what you get.”

Con artists and fiction writers have a lot in common.  They create characters and situations that people believe in.  Episode four displayed how everyone has a little confidence ‘man’ inside them.

“Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.”

The case involves a grifter who sold private schools his live video feed of his polar exploration straight out of his apartment in New York City.  Unfortunately, someone didn’t like what he was doing and shot his face off, leaving the body unidentifiable.  The scam artist had multiple identities so Beckett and crew weren’t sure who they were dealing with.

Castle has managed to retrieve a copy of his latest book, Heat Wave, for Beckett, his muse for the character, Nikki Heat.  (Heat Wave has made the Best Sellers List. No, really.  Fans can buy it wherever books are sold.)  He’s terribly disappointed that Kate has not found time to read it yet and she really doesn’t seem to care one way or the other.  “This is the best case ever!”

Kate, besides working to solve a case, where there are layers and layers of confidence games, sets aside time to read Castle’s book in her tub with a glass of wine.  Unbeknownst to Castle, of course.  “I hate this case!”

We didn’t have the Author’s Poker Table, but there was an excellent discussion of favorite ‘con’ movies.  The Sting being declared the best – and there was also a Capricorn One mention.  The movie that made some people think the actual moon landing was a con job.

Alexis and Martha had a fair amount of storyline.  Rick is very overprotective of his daughter.  She has a hot violin teacher now – and Daddy Dearest had nothing to do with it.  Alexis reads her dad the riot act in an interrogation room.  You go, girl!  Leave it to grandmother to put it all in perspective.

This episode reminded me of why I like these characters.  Castle is a total extrovert and yet he can be very sensitive especially when it comes to his loved ones.  He has substance.  Kate enjoys the talented and charming Castle even when he annoys her.  She ‘makes him want to be a better man.’  What’s not to love?

Good episode.  They used the Castle-Beckett relationship to perfection.  The case premise was interesting but maybe one too many twists.

Next episode, October 19, guest stars Debi Mazar and Reed Diamond.  Arye Gross returns.   When the Bough Breaks gives us the question:  Will Castle decide to leave his muse?
