Solo show hoping for spring 2009 date
Carrie Fisher’s solo show “Wishful Drinking” aims to imbibe a few rounds on Broadway in spring 2009.
The autobiographical tale, which finished a successful stint at Berkeley Rep earlier this month, will tour to
cities including Santa Fe, N.M.; San Jose; and Boston ahead of a planned arrival on Broadway.
Production will likely have a Gotham run of about four months, according to producer Jonathan Reinis. Capitalized at $1.5 million, Broadway engagement may be followed by a London run.
In “Drinking,” Fisher riffs on her Hollywood upbringing, her substance abuse and her bipolar disorder. She touches on Paul Simon (to whom she was briefly married), George Lucas and parents Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, among other Hollywood names. Show will mark the writer-thesp’s first appearance on Broadway since a gig in the 1982 production of “Agnes of God.”
“Drinking” preemed at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse in a 2006 staging directed by Joshua Ravetch. Berkeley Rep a.d. Tony Taccone (“Bridge & Tunnel”) took over helming duties when the production played the Bay Area theater, where its $1.3 million take for a 9½-week engagement broke a box office record at the org.
Reinis, who hopes to get the show into one of Broadway’s smaller venues, said the tentative March start date for Gotham could shift based on theater availability and the timing of additional tour dates.
